| Within the next few years, it is planned that NSF will invest ~$110M in the construction of a cabled regional observatory system as part of its Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI). With this large investment, it is important that the scientific community has input into the detailed planning needed to design this cabled observatory. Current proposals for this system are generic in nature: it is important that plans be developed that realize the fullest potential of this unique and costly infrastructure. To achieve this objective, NSF has requested that we organize a planning workshop with the goal of formulating a detailed plan recommending locations for the backbone cables of the OOI regional cabled observing system.
