In response to identified community needs (Powell, 1998), the National Science Foundation and the Office of Naval Research are sponsoring a broad effort under the National Ocean Partnership Program (NOPP) to define, and plan for, the Ocean Information Technology Infrastructure (OITI) required to meet current and future scientific challenges in Ocean Science.

OITI is a broad concept that includes items such as:

  • Hardware: computing cycles, storage, networking
  • Tools: code portability, analysis and diagnostic software
  • People: documentation of model codes and assimilated products, technical assistance and training

Access to such resources is an issue that impacts scientific inquiry across Ocean Science:

  • Large teams (e.g., NOPP-funded modeling and data assimilation nodes) and individual investigators.
  • All Ocean Science disciplines (biology, chemistry, geology and physics)
  • Observationalists, diagnosticians and modelers.

As an initial step, the Steering Committee leading this planning effort seeks input from all interested members of the ocean science community in the form of a user survey. We need your ideas on how to shape a community infrastructure that will enable the scientific problems you feel are important. Please take time to download, fill out, and return the survey to oitisurvey@geo-prose.com.

Statistical analysis of overall survey results will be published on this web site. Discursive responses, experiences, and opinions will be treated as confidential and will be used to gauge overall community response.

Please respond by March 14, 2000
