The Office of Naval Research and the National Science Foundation are sponsoring a broad effort under the National Ocean Partnership Program (NOPP) to define, and plan for, the Ocean Information Technology Infrastructure (OITI) required to meet current and future scientific challenges the in ocean sciences. Scientists in our programs have benefited greatly from the service and support they have received over the years at your centers. As the nature of our computational use changes, the community needs have also changed. The ocean sciences community has identified information technology needs (Powell, 1998) and we have appointed an OITI Steering Group committee to define potential means of addressing those needs by considering the availability, appropriateness and access to the following:
- Hardware: computing cycles, storage, networking
- Tools: code portability, analysis and diagnostic software
- People: documentation of model codes and assimilated products, technical assistance and training.
There is a need to integrate the planned availability of resources provided by the computational centers in the future in the construction of proposed solutions. In addition, the OITI Steering Committee would like to assess the future plans of the leading computational centers in meeting the needs indicated by an earlier community survey. We ask your assistance with this effort. Please fill out the brief survey and send to Ellen Kappel at ekappel@geo-prose.com. Statistical analysis of the present resources survey results will be published on this web site. Discursive responses, future plans, and opinions will be treated as confidential.
